Spotlight on the Languedoc-Roussillon boating industry

The region's boating industry was, once again, well represented at the Cannes Yachting Festival this year. After a very difficult period in the wake of the 2007 financial crisis, the boating industry is now booming. The market for large yachts (over 50 feet), including large cruising catamarans, is particularly healthy.

The Languedoc-Roussillon is a major manufacturing zone for these large catamarans, as demonstrated by the presence and development over recent years of the main French shipyards, soon to be joined by their foreign counterparts.

The industry is becoming more structured, with shows such as that of Grande-Motte held before the tourist season, and niches such as kitesurfing which develops and grows each year at the various spots on our coast (Grande-Motte, Leucate, St. Cyprien, etc.).

This year, the Outremer shipyard at Grande-Motte is set to produce some 17 boats. Catana is introducing a major product innovation with its Bali range of low-cost boats (40, 43 and 45 feet) mainly for the hire market. Recently, a Swiss investor (Swiss Catamaran) has restarted production of a 55-foot catamaran at Balaruc-les-Bains.

At Cannes, we initiated relations with qualified contacts within foreign boat builders (Chinese, Swiss and Australian) interested in developing boat finishing and delivery facilities for their clients from all over the world.

Further innovation is in the air with large-size hybrid yacht projects under way and renewed investment in ports to benefit the boat building and maintenance shipyards of the Canet-en-Roussillon nautical cluster, with a new 200 Ton travelift.
